SELECTED PORTFOLIO
Although this website was built to service my graduate thesis project, I am also using it to house a portfolio and CV while I transition to a personal site. As such, I’ve collected a few examples from the variety of media work I’ve done across my professional and academic careers. These projects span genres and platforms from narrative and documentary feature films to television & digital media to music production. As I’ve created hundreds of media pieces it would be difficult to offer a comprehensive list or work reel. Please review the selections below and explore the links to see these projects in detail and view an even broader group of projects. Recent research work, political media, entertainment-focused pieces and highlights from my music production career are included in this portfolio.
Research & Academic Work
“Persist: New Ideas for Journalism in an Age of Distrust” is a multimedia publication developed and created by students of the 2018 Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change. Each summer, an international group of media innovators, students and faculty convene in Austria to engage and work through issues related to media, journalism, pedagogy and communication. In 2018, I attended this academy and co-lead a diverse group of students from China, Lebanon, Austria, Mexico, the UK and the US in developing a chapter for this publication.
I created this :30 spec spot to highlight the distinction between Secretary Clinton’s record of public service and that of then-candidate Donald Trump. The concept was to offset Trump’s lack of experience in public office by using audio/visual media that showed Sec. Clinton engaged in high stakes governance.
“Purple Violets” is a feature film written and directed by Edward Burns and starring Burns, Patrick Wilson, Selma Blair and Debra Messing. I mixed and produced the score/soundtrack for this film as I did on the previous Burns project, “The Groomsmen,” with John Leguizamo, Jay Mohr and Brittany Murphy.
While I’ve created hundreds of music compositions throughout my career in broadcast post-production, I always had an affinity for the work on this show. Tyler Florence is a talented host and the presentation of this program was very polished. This show also features quite a few of the best recipes I’ve ever tried from network talent. “Tyler’s Ultimate” was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 2010.
Not one of David Bowie’s most beloved recordings but one of the most pivotal of my professional life. At 22, when your boss tells you you’ll be working with David Bowie and Nile Rodgers for a year, you’ve arrived. This was also the last time Bowie would record with Mick Ronson of the original Spiders from Mars lineup.
Entitled “Virality Workshop",” our chapter took the form of four small projects - a short film, a website, a mobile application and a game - focused on viral media and distrust in news journalism. While I co-lead this whole group, I also participated in one of the groups and conceptualized and wrote the section called “Viral Eyes.” “Viral Eyes” is a design for a mobile application that links meme graphics to their original sources in an attempt to lead readers to verifiable content and reduce the gap between information and entertainment.
Political Communications
I was the chief media strategist and executive producer for the campaigns to elect Leland Cheung Lt. Governor of Massachusetts (2014) and State Senator (2016). In 2014, despite entering the race later than his two main opponents, Cheung received nearly 30% of the vote and the endorsement of the Boston Globe.
Film/Television
The feature documentary “We’re Not Blood,” won the Best Dramatic Feature Documentary award at the 2015 Atlanta International Docufest. I was an Associate Producer on this film and it was my second project with Jeff Togman, the first being a feature entitled “Home,” distributed by Netflix.
With many high profile projects flowing through the Food Network, I’ve sometimes been able to contribute to programming that transcends TV and becomes part of pop culture. “Guy’s Big Bite” is one of those projects. My music was even parodied for a sketch on Saturday Night Live. This show continues to be successful and has been nominated for Daytime Emmy awards on three occasions.
Music
Released after the massive success of “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness,” this album is considered something of a disappointment in terms of sales. The truth is that no follow up would ever have matched the iconic status their previous work had achieved but, for me, this was incredibly important creative work. Sales be damned, there’s a lot to like about “Adore.”
Although much of my work as a graduate student focused on the many facets of data policy and data economics, I am also deeply interested in smart city design and civic engagement. In 2019, a research article I wrote entitled “Simple Quadrant Graphs: A Step Toward Citizen-Focused Design Tools to Inform Smart City Data Policy” was published in the inaugural issue of the Journal of Civic Media. The article introduces both a toolset for recording public data collection preferences and a public information display system.
This piece was originally executed in response to a design challenge with the goal to reach sympathetic independent voters in the aftermath of Mitt Romney’s infamous “47%” comment. The script was designed to promote unity and mutual respect in the face of divisive rhetoric.
I composed and mixed the score for this feature comedy starring Anna Faris, Justin Chambers and Judah Friedlander. The film was written and directed by Paul S. Myers and Brennan Shroff, the directorial debut of producers from “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” and “The Daily Show,” respectively.
Often, promos have quite a lot riding on them. In the case of Iron Chef Redemption, the show was an update to a very successful franchise and, as a result, a great deal of financial and emotional investment was placed on it. This is not one of the spots for which I’ve won a Promax award but it represented a shift in production value and creative license at the time. Worth having a look at, for sure.
This is the debut album from Five for Fighting, the creative vehicle for singer/songwriter John Ondrasik. The song “Superman” would put this band on the map as a post-9/11 anthem of everyday heroes, but I believe we captured a special sound for this album and “White Picket Fences” remains on of my favorite mixes I’ve ever done.
